Just when you thought Manchester United's spending in the transfer window might be over, new transfer stories start to pick up.

The latest rumour doing the rounds is the that Portugal and Southampton centre half Jose Fonte is set to swap the South Coast for the North West and for a change for a Southampton player, it won't be to Liverpool.

The Saints captain would surely be tempted by the prospect of joining Jose Mourinho's Old Trafford revolution and the potential trophies that could bring but would face stiff competition for places. Eric Bailly has come in and already looks like a nailed on pick and so for that other centre half role Fonte would be up against Chris Smalling, Daley Blind and Phil Jones.

There's no reason, though, why a defender as consistently solid as him couldn't make the position his own.

One thing is certain though, United aren't finished in the transfer market and here at FootballFanCast we think this FIVE could also be coming through the Old Trafford doors before the end of the window...

Raphael Varane

Varane3

Varane has all the makings of a world class centre back but until Pepe or Sergio Ramos make way at Real Madrid he's not going to improve in the Spanish capital.

If he did move to United he'd surely get the nod ahead of Fonte and immediately forge a partnership with Eric Bailly with the potential to shut out Premier League attacks for years to come. Mourinho has signed him once before, there's every chance he could again.

Gabriel Barbosa

The Barbosa to United rumour is really gathering pace and it's a potential deal that makes a lot of sense.

Manchester United may have a certain Zlatan Ibrahimovic up front but there's no escaping his age so a contingency plan is needed.

Marcus Rashford has a lot expected of him but it wouldn't be fair to expect him to take on the mantle by himself, the answer? Step forward 'Gabigol.'

Alexandre Lacazette

Lacazette2

If there's one thing Jose Mourinho likes doing almost as much as sprinting down touchlines and winning trophies, it's winding up Arsene Wenger.

It's a widely held belief that Arsenal would like to sign the Frenchman but for whatever reason nothing has happened. Meanwhile, United need some pace up top and with Mourinho's preference for fast wide players Lacazette to United suddenly makes sense.

It couldn't, could it?

Mourinho likes a holding midfield player and currently doesn't have one to his taste. Marouane Fellaini is too busy trying to break people's noses whilst Michael Carrick looks set to spend most of this season on the bench.

Paul Pogba would be wasted playing there and Henrikh Mkhitaryan certainly won't be in that role. It's a position at United that needs filling quickly and Matic might just be the one do to so.

Danilo

Danilo 1

The Red Devils could also do with a more orthodox right back than Antonio Valencia.

Mourinho has said before he wants to sign players specific to each role on the pitch so why on earth would he continue with a makeshift right back?

In fairness Valencia performs admirably pretty often in that role but with his new manager determined to have specialists all over the pitch he could get Danilo in, especially if Dani Carvajal is Real Madrid's first choice right back.
