Manchester United brought in some fantastic players during the summer transfer window in the likes of Angel Di Maria, Radamel Falcao and Ander Herrera.
However, they are still lacking defensive satisfaction as demonstrated in their embarrassing 5-3 loss to Leicester City this past weekend.
United may have signed defenders Luke Shaw and Marcos Rojo during the summer, but they haven’t been good enough so far since arriving at the club.
Here is a list of FIVE possible defenders that the Red Devils can buy in January to help solve their defending crisis in no particular order.
The Aston Villa defender has been considered highly by many after his performance at the World Cup with the Netherlands. The 29 year old is in a bit of a rough patch when it comes to his contract at Villa Park as well so he is there for the taking. However, I think he will only be a short term solution if he is bought to the club. In January, Vlaar will be in the final six months in his contract so they might be able to get him for a good price.
Transfer Market Value: £5.72m
The German defender had a fantastic summer, winning the World Cup with Germany and earning a new contract with current side Borussia Dortmund, keeping him at the side till the summer of 2017. Still, this has not put United off targeting him for a transfer this past summer but he refused a move to England as he was 100% happy at his current club. At the age of 25, Hummels is the defender United crave due to his size, strength, athleticism and composure on the ball and they’ll hope to convince him to transfer in January. A big transfer fee may be required for this to happen though.
Transfer Market Value: £30.8m
The 24-year-old defender was linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur this past summer transfer window. Due to third-party ownership of the Argentine, the move was called off. United could try and go for Musacchio in the January transfer window. Over 32 La Liga appearances last season, Musacchio collected nine clean sheets.
In a recent interview, he said he was happy at his current club Villarreal and is enjoying his football in Spain. United will be hoping to convince him otherwise in order to solve their defending problems.
Transfer Market Value: £8.8m
Diego Godin had a great season last campaign. He led his side, Atletico Madrid, to a league title as well as the final of the Champions League. During their title winning campaign, the Uruguayan helped his side achieve 19 clean sheets. United have only managed to keep two clean sheets this season and have conceded eight goals, so buying Godin with his characteristics of putting his body on the line in every game would be excellent.
Transfer Market Value: £22m
Buying two defenders that already know how to work with one another would be great for United so if they are able to buy Hummels, they should go for his Borussia Dortmund partner as well, Nevan Subotic. The Serbian only made 10 Bundesliga appearances last season due to a cruciate ligament rupture but now, he has fully recovered. In January, he will have one and a half years left on his current contract, and alongside the fact he was out for the majority of last season, United might be able to barter a good price for his services.
