Henrikh Mkhitaryan appears to be a wanted man this summer.
With Manchester United and Arsenal among a clutch of clubs interested in the Armenian’s signature, Borussia Dortmund are not looking to lose one of their star players very easily.
Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc has confirmed the Bundesliga club “will make a decision this week” as Mkhitaryan continues to be linked with a move away to the Premier League, although the 27-year-old has confirmed that he is in no rush to sign a new deal.
The player’s agent has indicted his client could leave the Westfalenstadion this summer a year before his contract expires. Mkhitaryan scored 11 league goals and provided 15 assists as Dortmund finished second behind Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga, but a move to England has long been suggested as a possibility.
With that in mind, if Manchester United are serious about the midfielder, then why should they act fast and get in before The Gunners? Here are FIVE reasons…
At 27, the Dortmund star is at his peak and although the German side seem to be losing a few of their key men this summer, they are not trying desperately hard to keep him.
Even if United sign him on a three year deal, he will still only be 30 years old at the end of that spell, and will have matured into a decent Premier League player with bags of European and international experience.
For a midfielder, Mkhitaryan scores plenty of goals and his assist rate is up there with the best in Europe. With 11 league goals last season, 23 in all competitions, Mkhitaryan impressed throughout the 2015/16 season and was a key reason why Dortmund finished runners-up in the Bundesliga and German Cup and reached the Europa League quarter-finals.
Playing for Dortmund has often meant playing second string to Bayern, and last season, Dortmund finished runners-up twice to the Bavarian team.
Before joining the Bundesliga club, Mkhitaryan enjoyed success in Ukraine with Shakhtar Donetsk and will be looking for a club that can offer him further trophies and title potential. In truth, he is much more likely to want to go to Manchester then, than Arsenal.
Mkhitaryan is an attacking midfielder capable of playing as a second striker as well.
He thrives playing just behind the strikers, where he always looks to link up with his team-mates in and around the box. Tearing apart opposition defences time and time again, he makes space for the striker/wingers to exploit and creates goal scoring opportunities. Mkhitaryan has been praised for his technique, movement, accurate passing, dribbling, creativity, ball control and work rate.
He is equipped with a dangerous shot, trickery to beat defenders and a superb vision to go for the pass. He has been likened to Frank Lampard by some.
This is the right setting to showcase his talents. Conflicting reports suggest that the player will take his time to consider a new deal, others speculate that with just one year remaining on his contract, and his determination to include a release clause in any new contract, it appears certain that it will bring an end to his three-year stay at the Signul Iduna Park.
If that happens, then no other league will give him the platform to push himself further. With the some of the world’s best players already here, the TV exposure around the world, the money and a famous name like Manchester United on your chest, a player of his quality will find his feet quickly and establish himself as one of the elite players here in England.
