Jose Mourinho is confident that his Manchester United side can secure what he calls a ‘statement signing’ during his first transfer window with the club, according to reports from the Manchester Evening News.

The Portuguese manager is hoping he can seal a deal in the coming months that will make ‘everyone sit up straight’ as he looks to build himself a title worthy squad.

The Red Devils' first signing of the summer Eric Bailly - the highly rated Ivorian defender - became the club's 5th most expensive ever signing following his £30million switch from La Liga side Villarreal, and now Mourinho will hope he continue to his summer spending in similar fashion.

Already linked with a host of high profile names this summer including the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba, United seem intent on landing themselves a marquee signing that will signal a return to their former glory and once again have them viewed as genuine title contenders.

So whose signature is that could become a hallmark signing for United? Here are five suggestions...

Gareth Bale

bale

Real Madrid are allegedly due to offer Bale a ‘contract for life’ following his impressive performances at Euro 2016 that led to his home country Wales topping their group, ahead of both England and Slovakia.

Interestingly, with Britain now having left the EU, Bale becomes one of three his current club are allowed on their books thanks to FIFA regulations. With James Rodriguez, Casemiro and Danilo already all non-EU players, can United capitalise on this turn of events?

Toni Kroos

Kroos

The former Bayern Munich and current Real Madrid midfielder is one of the most highly rated in world football. The German has near enough everything to his game: a great range of passing, great work rate, skill and a devastating right foot.

Former manager Louis Van Gaal reportedly pulled the plug on a move for Kroos back in 2014, however with Mourinho at the helm it could be the Germany international is re-united with his former boss at Old Trafford.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic

It would come as no surprise if Ibrahimovic was to finally make the switch to Old Trafford after months and months of speculation over his future.

Having now retired from International football following Sweden’s early exit from Euro 2016, it seems the former Barcelona striker is finally are to make his move as he dismissed rumours he would be playing at the Olympics with his retirement.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan

Mkhitaryan

Allegedly his ‘dream club’ - according to his agent anyway - Mkhitaryan's move to United seems to be edging closer and closer by the day with the Red Devil’s having tabled a second offer believed to be in the region of around £28million.

21 goals and 20 assists in all competitions last season was a terrific return for a player described as ‘one of the most talented in the world’ by former manager Jurgen Klopp.

Aaron Ramsey

Aaron Ramsey

Another Welshman who has had a terrific Euro 2016, Ramsey has re-found his form to show us his dazzling best while representing his country in France this summer.

Mourinho is reported to be interested in signing the £50million rated Arsenal midfielder if he is unable to secure the services of Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

It would certainly be a signing that would make ‘everyone sit up’, none more so than Arsene Wenger.
