According to reports by Spanish media outlet Marca, Manchester United duo Juan Mata and Ander Herrera will be allowed to leave the club this summer, but only if they want to go.

What's the word, then?

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho

Well, Marca says that while Red Devils manager Jose Mourinho isn't going to put the Spanish duo up for sale at the end of the season, the Portuguese boss would be willing to let them go if they want to play regular first-team football with both players not expected to be first-choice picks in the XI next term.

Neither player has been a regular in the United team during the current campaign, with Herrera in particular falling from grace following the arrival of Nemanja Matic from Chelsea last summer, despite winning the club's previous Player of the Year award.

How have Mata and Herrera done this season?

Well, while the former has made 35 appearances in all competitions, he has only completed the full 90 minutes on six occasions and has been sparsely used in the matches against United's direct rivals in the Premier League – playing just 172 minutes in seven matches against their top-six opponents., with Red Devils fans saying they want to see him on the pitch more often.

Meanwhile, the latter made 50 outings in total last term but while he has made 30 so far during the current campaign, only eight of those have come from starts in the top flight.

Should United sell them this summer?

It's difficult to say.

Mourinho obviously feels that Mata still has something to offer in the attacking midfield positions, but his thoughts on the duo according to Marca suggest that if he gets his way in the transfer market and brings the players he wants to Old Trafford this summer, Mata and Herrera will both be surplus to requirements.

With Michael Carrick retiring and with the futures of Marouane Fellaini and Paul Pogba potentially in doubt, there may be a way back for Herrera to become a regular in the XI again, but not if the Portuguese boss splashes out on two new central midfielders, or if contract rebel Fellaini agrees a new deal.
