Reports in Germany suggest Bayern Munich are preparing a move for the 23-year-old that would see them capture the third major star from their Bundesliga rivals in less than a year.
Gundogan’s contract expires in the summer of 2015, and with a long term back injury ruling him out for the majority of the season, Dortmund may well consider cashing in on the £25million rated playmaker in the summer.
Real Madrid had previously been considered the favourites for his signature, while Manchester United had also registered their interest.
But according to German new magazine Focus, sounding out talks have already begun at Bayern to suss out whether a summer move could be on the cards.
The news comes a surprise, with Bayern suggesting only a few weeks ago they would not be looking to sign any more players from Dortmund.
Pep Guardiola’s side have already signed Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski on a pre-contract agreement, moves which have left the relationship between last season’s Champions League finalists sour.
However, Madrid still seems the most likely destination for Gundogan should he depart, with a swap deal for Nuri Sahin a genuine possibility.
