Ander Herrera has backed his Manchester United teammate Scott McTominay 'to be a good player for the club' in the coming years.

McTominay has enjoyed a breakthrough season at Old Trafford, with the 21-year-old becoming a feature of the first team in recent months.

The midfielder has 19 first-team appearances to his name this season, and has quickly become a favourite of Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho due to his all-action style.

Herrera, who has been on the treatment table in recent weeks, has paid tribute to the qualities of the Scotland international, backing him to enjoy a long and successful career at Old Trafford.

Herrera told United Review:

"I knew when I saw him training with us that he was a very competitive guy and that he wants to help the team and he wants to learn every day.

"He’s going to be a good player for the club. He’s a team player and he can help in any position you put him."

McTominay turned out for Scotland during the recent international break, but the midfielder would be eligible to represent England as long as he does not make a competitive appearance for Alex McLeish's team.

He will hope to be in the United XI that starts Saturday's Manchester derby with runaway Premier League leaders Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
