In their third season since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United are still looking to rebuild their squad and get back to the levels they reached just before the departure of the great man.
But there’s another great man whose departure United fans mourn. And that man hits the headlines week after week, breaking United hearts in the process. Cristiano Ronaldo can stake a very good case for being the world’s best player in any case, but in the absence of Leo Messi, Ronaldo is unquestionably the best around. And tonight he’s taken yet another step towards cementing his place at the top.
Tonight against Malmo, Ronaldo celebrated his 500th career goal. Just let that sink in for a moment. 500. There are players with 500 appearances and are considered legends for their longevity. Ronaldo has 500 goals. It’s madness.
But it only serves to rub salt into the open wounds of Manchester United fans who lost him years ago, but now have to contend with Antonio Valencia at right back and celebrating equalising penalties against Wolfsburg with as vociferously as they’d usually celebrate a last-minute winner.
Tough times for United fans to have to watch a club legend hit such dizzying heights, no matter how well-liked he is in the red half of Manchester. But who knows, maybe Memphis Depay will hit those heights in the second half tonight….
