Well, it's safe to say that Manchester United's defence contributed to an embarrassing Champions League horror show in Valencia on Wednesday night, with Phil Jones the main culprit in a 2-1 loss which saw them finish second in their group behind Juventus.

The former Blackburn defender gave the Spanish side their all-important winning strike with a clumsy own-goal, in which he inadvertently tackled the ball past Sergio Romero in goal and watched on in agony as it trickled in.

Eric Bailly fared slightly better than Jones did on the night, but he too contributed to a thoroughly disappointing showing. Victor Lindelof and Chris Smalling were Jose Mourinho's first-choice pairing in the centre of defence, but the former's recent injury against Crystal Palace has disrupted that chemistry. The latter has also picked up an injury since then, leaving United with just Bailly and Jones as their only fit centre-backs.

Mourinho went with Jones alongside Smalling in the last Premier League game against Fulham, but opted for a three at the back formation with Bailly and Marcos Rojo either side of Smalling in the game prior to that against Arsenal, but two of those three are now out injured - who knows what he'll go with against Liverpool when United travel to Anfield this Sunday.

Personally, I think Nemanja Matic and Bailly is the best pairing United can put out to contend with the likes of Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino at the weekend and perhaps shut them out in typical Mourinho-ball fashion.

Having said that, what centre-back pairing do you think the former Real Madrid and Chelsea boss should plump for? Have your say down below and keep an eye out for the published results...
