According to reports in the Daily Mail, Manchester United are keeping close tabs on Borussia Dortmund winger Christian Pulisic, who is rated at €45m (approximately £39.8m) by Transfermarkt.

What's the word, then?

Well, the Daily Mail says that Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho is looking to sign a winger and a playmaker either in January or next summer, and he has been watching developments surrounding Pulisic carefully.

The Daily Mail says that the 19-year-old has been touted as one of the best young players in the world following some of his performances for his club, although their Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich are also understood to admire the USA international.

The report adds that United's Premier League rivals Liverpool failed with a move for the teenager last year, with Dortmund holding out for more than £35m for the attacker.

How has Pulisic done this season?

Despite only turning 19 years of age in September the American has been an impressive performer in what has been a generally disappointing campaign for the Bundesliga giants.

The versatile winger has scored four goals – including the winner in the 2-1 victory against Hoffenheim last weekend – and provided one assist in 23 appearances in all competitions.

According to WhoScored.com, the teenager has made 25 key passes in 21 appearances in the German top flight and Champions League this season, while he has successfully completed 70 of the 151 dribbles he has attempted.

Would he be a good signing for United?

He certainly would be.

While Pulisic isn't the finished article yet, he looks to have great potential and his ability and willingness to take on opposition defenders from either flank means he would be a huge threat in the Red Devils' frontline.

The American winger may need to improve his tally of goals and assists going forward, but if Mourinho could bring the 19-year-old to Old Trafford for around the £40m mark he would probably be delighted.

Perhaps the only thing going against him is his lack of height and real strength, which the Portuguese manager is renowned for liking in his players when you look at the likes of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial, although Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard are two examples of exceptions to the case.
