Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has revealed that Manchester United target Antoine Griezmann will be allowed to leave the club, reports The Guardian.
The Red Devils were heavily linked with a move for the France international in the summer.
However, Atletico’s transfer embargo persuaded Griezmann to stay put for the time being.
Numerous clubs have been touted as potential suitors for the attacker, who has scored seven goals in all competitions so far this season.
Simeone has indicated that the forward could leave the club in the near future, which could spark a bidding war.
The Guardian quotes the Atletico boss as saying:
“Of course he can leave at some point, like Diego Costa and Arda Turan did in their day. I love watching my players grow, and if one of them tells me that they have the unique opportunity of playing for a certain team, after they did everything they could for me, like Griezmann has done, I’ll say it’s not a problem. I know that he needs to grow.”
Romelu Lukaku cemented himself as the team’s first-choice striker when he scored 10 goals in his first nine outings.
However, the forward’s goal threat has been sporadic of late as he has found the back of the net just three times in his last eight matches.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic has returned to fitness, but the 36-year-old has struggled to grab a regular spot in the team.
Bringing in Griezmann would hugely boost the team’s strength up front and would lessen the burden on Lukaku’s shoulders.
The problem that United will face is the level of competition from the other clubs fighting for his signature.
