Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane is open to joining Manchester United, according to Don Balon.

What's the word?

The France international was linked with a switch to Old Trafford in the summer, but a move failed to materialise.

Instead, the 24-year-old's deal at the Bernabeu was extended by five years.

However, Don Balon states that Varane feels under-appreciated at the Spanish outfit and is willing to consider a move to United.

It is believed that Red Devils manager Jose Mourinho has promised the Frenchman that he will be a key figure at the North-West outfit if he decides to join.

Is this the right call?

There is no doubt that Varane would be a welcome addition to a United defence that struggles with injury problems.

Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Eric Bailly have all been on the treatment table recently.

Varane is comfortable at the top level considering that he has been at the Bernabeu since 2011, but he has never before played in the Premier League.

If the former Lens player was to join United, then it could have a detrimental effect on Victor Lindelof, who has struggled for game time already since his switch from Benfica in the summer.

The 23-year-old's last two performances have earned him plaudits from the fans, but his progression could be halted if Varane comes along.
