Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has suggested that he is not interested in signing Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea, reports the Metro.
Ever since the shot-stopper’s proposed move to the Bernabeu collapsed in the summer of 2015, De Gea has been a rumoured target for the Spanish club in almost every window.
Despite seemingly wanting to join Real at the time, the 27-year-old ended up making a U-turn and signed a new contract.
As it stands, De Gea will become a free agent in 18 months’ time unless a 12-month extension is activated.
Zidane has calmed speculation about a possible swoop for the keeper by telling reporters:
“I have two goalkeepers, understand? I am a Real Madrid coach and I am happy with my two goalkeepers, I will always say the same. I saw Keylor well, although we can always give a little bit more, like always.”
In the football world, things can change dramatically over the course of a day or two.
Managers can lose their jobs after a handful of unsavoury results and players can pledge their commitment to a club a few months before moving on.
Zidane’s comments could be an attempt to rid the squad of any potential distractions, particularly the goalkeepers.
If Navas is concerned about losing his number one spot to De Gea, then his focus on upcoming games could be compromised.
On the other hand, the Madrid boss may genuinely not be considering a swoop for the United star.
However, until the transfer window passes, nothing can be ruled out.
