According to reports in the Sunday Mirror, Manchester United are ready to make a shock move to re-sign West Bromwich Albion defender Jonny Evans, who is rated at around £30m.

What's the word, then?

Well, the Sunday Mirror says that Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho believes his predecessor Louis van Gaal made a mistake when he sold the Northern Ireland international to the Baggies for £6m two-and-a-half years ago.

Now the Sunday Mirror says the Portuguese manager wants to bring the 29-year-old defender back to the club, but he will have to fight off competition from arch-rivals Manchester City and Arsenal for the centre-back.

The report adds that City had a £20m offer for Evans rejected during the summer transfer window, and a bid of around £30m would be required to convince West Brom to sell their captain.

How has Evans done this season?

The 29-year-old has made 14 Permier League appearances for the west Midlands outfit this term, and he is yet to be on the winning side in what has been an awful campaign for the team so far.

They are 15 top flight games without a win going into their clash against Man United at the Hawthorns on Sunday, but the Northern Irishman has still been one of their most consistent performers.

According to WhoScored.com, the skipper has won 18 tackles and 26 of the 44 aerial duels he has faced, while he has made 26 interceptions and 55 clearances.

As well as being a defender, Evans is also comfortable on the ball too and he has successfully completed all seven of the dribbles he has attempted.

Would he be a good signing for United?

If Mourinho is looking for an experienced defender who perhaps wouldn't expect to start every week, then Evans could prove to be a shrewd buy.

The fact that Pep Guardiola and Arsene Wenger are already interested in the 29-year-old suggests that he is underrated, but some would argue whether United need another centre-back.

Considering they have Phil Jones, Eric Bailly, Victor Lindelof, Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo that can play there, it would be strange to bring Evans in unless at least one of those is leaving.

Of course, Bailly will be missing for a few months because of injury, and Mourinho may believe that Evans could slot in as a left-sided centre-back in a three-man defence.
