Mauro Icardi has told Inter Milan that they will have to reach the Champions League this season if they want to stand  a chance of keeping him, leaving the door open for Manchester United to nab the Argentine striker.

What's the story?

According to Don Balon, Icardi has told the forces that be at Inter that they must secure a place in Europe's top competition in order to keep him on their books, which is no given at the moment with the club sitting one point outside the top four in Serie A.

Don Balon has already cited Real Madrid as possible suitors for the 25-year-old, but United have attacking problems of their own and also could be about to make a move for the forward.

Should United make a move?

United gaffer Jose Mourinho was quite clear earlier this month when asked about whether the team needed to boost its attacking options.

He said: “Speculation in the summer you have to go to other areas, attacking players I am really happy.

“We have Mata, Lukaku, Rashford, Martial, Alexis, I don’t want attacking players.”

Yet despite Mourinho's insistence that his club are not in the market for a forward, he will be concerned by his latest slate of injuries - with Rashford and Ibrahimovic both sidelined with injury.

Furthermore, Lukaku has come in for a lot of stick this season despite his 12 league goals, and hasn't exactly endeared himself to United fans with the two mistakes he made in December's derby defeat to City leading to two goals.

Mourinho talks a tough game, but United need consistency up front and Icardi could be the man to provide it.
