As reported by The Sun, Manchester United are interested in signing Bayern Munich central defender Jerome Boateng in this summer's transfer window.

What's the story?

After a number of poor defensive performances this season, the central defensive area is clearly going to be a big priority for the Red Devils when the transfer window opens.

The Sun report that one player Jose Mourinho is interested in is £50m-rated Jerome Boateng, Bayern Munich's trusted 29-year-old defender.

The paper reckon that the Old Trafford side are set to battle it out with Manchester City for his signature, with Pep Guardiola also said to be a big fan having previously worked with him at the German giants.

Can Mourinho convince him to reject his former side and sign for their rivals?

Worth the fuss?

With over 250 appearances for Bayern Munich since joining in 2011, Boateng has emerged as one of the most impressive defenders in European football, and one of the most successful too.

He has won an impressive 14 major honours for club and country, including a UEFA Champions League and World Cup.

Not even taking into account his ability, that trophy winning pedigree is something that can enhance an ambitious Manchester United squad.

After shaking off injury and fitness issues in recent seasons, the German international is again performing regularly for Bayern, making 24 appearances in all competitions this term and helping them breeze into the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

If available this summer, he is undoubtedly a player that Man United should be targeting.
