Marcus Rashford struggled in front of goal during England's 0-0 draw with Croatia on Friday night, as the two clearest-cut chances of the game both fell to the Manchester United striker.

Rashford burst onto the scene in the early stages of 2016, scoring twice in the first half of a 5-1 win over Danish side Midtjylland in the Europa League, before marking his Premier League debut against Arsenal three days later with two more goals and an assist.

Since then though, the now 20-year-old has struggled for both game time and goals, largely thanks to the fact that he has been either criticised, overlooked or stuck out on the wing by United boss Jose Mourinho.

The youngster has only scored once so far in seven appearances in all competitions for United, and his poor form now seems to be carrying over to the national side after he netted both of England's goals in the last international break in games against Spain and Switzerland.

Behind the closed doors in Rijeka on Friday, England struggled to create many chances other than the two that fell to Rashford, with Harry Kane and Eric Dier's headers against the woodwork the only other real glimpses of goal.

In the first half, both sides had a sight of goal when their full-backs pulled the ball back, but Raheem Sterling failed to get on the end of Ben Chilwell's cross and Andrej Kramaric drove a shot into the ground and straight at Jordan Pickford.

Before the hour-mark, England's other full-back Kyle Walker played Rashford in behind the Croatian defence, but the United striker got it all wrong and scuffed the ball into the grateful arms of keeper Dominik Livakovic.

Then just two minutes later, the ball broke to Raheem Sterling on the edge of the box and the Manchester City man found Rashford. The youngster's first touch was exceptional to take him beyond Dejan Lovren, but his tame finish was representative of his current lack of form.

During the bore draw, Rashford also had five unsuccessful touches, giving up possession way too many times and halting any forward progress that the Three Lions were hoping to make.

The 20-year-old was used as a winger by Gareth Southgate, but his failings in that position under an extremely harsh Mourinho (who has often singled out Rashford for individual criticism) have proved that when he gets the chance he must be played upfront, and his reasonably poor 81 per cent pass accuracy against Croatia only serves to further this argument.

Rashford is usually the one you would want on the end of chances rather than trying to create them, the only thing lacking in that department in the Nations League stalemate though was a touch of confidence.
