Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has reveal that Manchester United almost signed striker Karim Benezma before the Frenchman’s switch to Real Madrid.
Benzema attracted the interest of some of Europe’s biggest clubs after bursting on to the scene at Lyon and helping them win four Ligue 1 titles.
Such form earned him a move to Real Madrid in a deal worth €35million in 2009, but Aulas has revealed that Man United were also in for the striker that year and narrowly missed out on his signature.
He told Canal Sport: “For a long time he wanted to play one day at Real Madrid and when operations began to fall into place, we did not object.
“The proposal was superior to Manchester United’s but he was given the opportunity to go where he wanted.
“I am very happy for him. This is the best striker in La Liga and one of the best in the world. The criticism he has received are part of the life of a professional football player, but we had to be above it all.”
Benzema has netted an impressive 116 goals and 246 games in all competitions for Real Madrid.
