As reported by The Independent, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is targeting four key summer transfer window signings, including Tottenham Hotspur's Toby Alderweireld.

What's the story?

After a disappointing UEFA Champions League exit, Man United fans are already questioning which established first team players should be staying on at the club at the end of the season.

And it could be a summer window of great upheaval if the latest report from The Independent is true.

The paper report that Mourinho could axe as many as seven players from his squad and is targeting four key signings in a variety of positions, the priority of which is the centre-back area.

The report goes on to state that defender Toby Alderweireld is amongst Mourinho's top targets, currently rated at £31.5m by Transfermarkt.

Will it allow them to compete for the title?

The big aim at the club next season will of course be challenging Manchester City for the English Premier League title, having watched their city rivals destroy all opposition in their path this term.

Mourinho undoubtedly already has a talented squad at his disposal, even if his starting eleven is looking a bit disjointed at the moment with big money signings like Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez losing form.

On paper, they were exactly the kind of players that were needed at the club, but have been two of the most underwhelming in recent weeks.

The Portuguese has already spent significant amounts since taking charge and while there's been improvement, they still aren't the finished article.

If they can add four key signings this summer, they could be the final pieces of the jigsaw that Mourinho has been assembling all this time. It's either that, or the pressure begins to mount.
