Man United boosted as Spaniards chase Arsenal target

Manchester United have been handed a boost in the race for Fabio Coentrao, with reports from The Express claiming that Real Madrid’s pursuit of Arsenal target Jose Luis Gaya may open the door for a £25m move.

The Red Devils have been linked with the Portuguese left-back for some time, with a swoop for his signature almost going through under David Moyes at the start of last season.

He is thought to have remained on their radar since, and with Real now after Gaya their chances may be boosted.

Arsenal have been linked with the 19-year-old Valencia left-back of late, but it’s now understood that Los Blancos are very keen.

A £13.5m release clause in the teenager’s contract may allow the European champions to pull off a deal, with manager Carlo Ancelotti thought to see him as a challenger for Marcelo.

Should Gaya arrive, Coentrao would almost certainly be available due to an increase in competition for a starting berth.

The left-sided defender is valued at around £25m, and can also play in a more advanced role on the wing.
