Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has admitted that a stunning move to re-sign Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid this summer is “not possible”.
The Red Devils have been aligned with a shock swoop for the 30-year-old Portugal ace in recent times with the club shopping for a marquee signing as Angel di Maria nears a switch to Paris Saint-Germain.
And even though United fans are eager to see ‘CR7’ return to Old Trafford, Van Gaal has admitted that a deal for the wide attacker won’t be happening any time soon:
“It is not possible,” he told BBC Sport. “Why not? Because you have the club (Real Madrid), Ronaldo and then you have Manchester United and how much Manchester United want to spend.”
Ronaldo is thought of as the best player on the planet, with the Real attacker having won the last two Ballon d’Or awards.
However, even though ‘Ronny’ s off the agenda, Van Gaal has revealed that he wants to add a proven, pacey forward player to his ranks before the close of the transfer window, with his current options not on a par with the European giants that his side are aiming to compete with:
“I can give examples of champions, Bayern Munich have (Franck) Ribery and (Arjen) Robben, Chelsea have (Eden) Hazard and Willian, Real Madrid – Ronaldo and (Gareth) Bale, Barcelona have Neymar and (Lionel) Messi,
“Manchester United fans want us to compete with these teams.
“(Ashley) Young and (Juan) Mata had fantastic seasons (last year), with assists and goals, but to win the Champions League you need speed also. That is why I think, maybe, we still have to buy a player with speed and creativity.”
