The Argentinian – who cost United £59.7m from Spanish giants Real Madrid – has failed to light up the Premier League like many expected him to do in August.
A robbery at his Cheshire home and difficulties in adapting to Van Gaal’s methods have thrown his future at the club in doubt, with French club Paris St-Germain reportedly ready to make a move.
Di Maria has not started since United’s defeat to Arsenal in the FA Cup when he was sent off but could be in line to make the first eleven against West Bromwich Albion.
“I think Di Maria shall stay and he is working very hard. I am pleased with his attitude, so that is not a problem,” said Van Gaal.
United play West Bromwich Albion on Saturday with the Red Devils looking to strengthen their grip on the top four. They are four points ahead of fifth-placed Liverpool having played a game fewer.
