Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has revealed that he may be forced to bench Wayne Rooney in the FA Cup semi-final against Everton due to his fitness concerns.
The 30-year-old only recently returned from a knee ligament injury which saw him sidelined for two and a half months.
He featured for the Under-21 side during his recovery while playing another 67 minutes in the 1-0 victory over Aston Villa last weekend.
However, Van Gaal admitted that he will see how Rooney does against Crystal Palace tonight before deciding whether or not he will start against the Toffees this Saturday.
“You are presuming that he plays on Saturday. But it’s dependable how he plays, like every player against Crystal Palace. We have to see how he is playing. That’s what I am saying,” he is quoted by the Express.
“He played very well in the first half against Villa but in the second half he was tiring. He has 60 minutes in his legs, he has recovered well and trained today so we have to see how he is feeling in the second half against Palace – but, of course, he still has to play good.”
The Dutchman is not likely to field a rotated side against the Eagles given that his team can still finish in the top four.
United are currently fifth in the Premier League table, but are only four points away from Arsenal in fourth with five games left to play.
Rooney has already featured 34 times in all competitions for his side this term, so far managing to score 14 goals while providing another four assists.
