Man United boss has concerns regarding Martial

According to The Times, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho and his coaching staff are concerned about Anthony Martial’s ‘focus’ and ‘determination’ amid off-field concerns.

What’s the word?

The Frenchman became the most expensive teenager in the history of the beautiful game when he joined the Red Devils from Monaco in summer 2015 for a £36m fee – that may yet rise to £57.6m due to add-ons.

He shone amid his first Red Devils campaign under Louis van Gaal, but during the past few months, rumours surrounding a split from the mother of his child, Samantha Helena, have swirled.

And The Times reveal that Mourinho has concerns about the 20-year-old, whose form has been patchy this season, with coaches informing him during recent months that the player appears unable to concentrate.

What does this mean for Martial?

It’s early days and we often forget that footballers are human beings, too. Martial left Monaco as a teenager and signed for Man United in a huge deal, uprooting his young family and moving into a new sphere of public attention in the process.

The winger-forward started the season as a first XI regular under Mourinho, but he’s had to content himself with less and less game time as the weeks have progressed – somewhat backing up claims of a concerned United manager.

This all melts into the theory that ‘The Special One’ is not the biggest fan of players of Martial’s style.

He famously fell out with Eden Hazard at Chelsea while trying desperately to make the Belgian attacker the wide midfielder he craved, and it’s often speculated that he favours players in the mould of Willian – hard-working and defensively disciplined – to operate on the flanks.

Where does the leave Martial? Only time will tell.
