Darren Fletcher’s eventual exit from Manchester United on Monday ended a 12 year spell at Old Trafford for the Scotsman.
New boss Louis Van Gaal named Fletcher as his new vice-captain upon taking the vacant managerial job last summer, which suggested the midfielder still had a few years left of his long United career.
But it just didn’t materialise and the 31-year-old had to ask to leave the club in order to get some regular first-team action this winter.
Van Gaal had openly admitted that he valued Fletcher’s experience in the changing room and would be quite happy if he wasn’t sold in the January transfer window.
But Fletcher joined West Brom earlier this week, which appears to have got Van Gaal all emotional. The Dutchman tried naming him in his squad to face Cambridge United at Old Trafford the other night.
As you can see from the below photo, Van Gaal clearly wishes he still had Fletcher to call upon. Instead he’s had to go with Ashley Young. Poor Louis…
