Man United boss wants England newbie

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has told his scouts to assess West Brom’s Saido Berahino ahead of next summer’s transfer window, according to reports from Goal.

The 21-year-old Baggies forward is currently the Premier League’s highest scoring Englishman with a tally of seven – one came against the Red Devils earlier this season – and has recently been rewarded with a senior Three Lions call-up on the back of his fine showings.

A number of the division’s big hitters – such as Liverpool and Spurs – are now after the Burundi-born ace, but LVG is hopeful of winning the race at the end of the season.

The Dutchman is understood to have instructed scouts to watch Berahino closely to assess whether or not he has the ability to step up to the highest level and boost the Old Trafford side’s hopes of taking back their spot as English football’s top force.

A January swoop is unlikely given claims that United will not be spending big once again, and this talk carries further bulk with Van Gaal set to use whatever funds he has to bolster his defensive options.

Berahino has already confessed that he may be tempted to leave West Brom in order to further his career.
