And with Van Gaal looking to bolster his defensive ranks this summer, the youngster has emerged as a target.
LVG has been unable to field a structured rearguard for much of the season, with injuries and suspensions having forced him to rotate between the likes of Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo, Phil Jones, Paddy McNair and Tyler Blackett in both two-man and three-man central set-ups.
Reports claim that Gimenez is seen as a long-term addition and that attempts to lure him from Madrid may be made at the end of the season.
