Man United chief confident of Rooney stay

Manchester United’s outgoing chief executive David Gill believes Wayne Rooney will stay at the club, according to the Independent.

The former Everton forward handed in a transfer request at the start of the month, and his future at Old Trafford is uncertain.

However, Gill says he is confident that the England international will be at Manchester United come September.

“I think as Alex said at his last press conference, that’s an issue for David Moyes and the new team to do, but look – I’m confident he’ll be there next season,” he told Sky Sports.

“I think he’s a great great player, it’s a great great club and the club doesn’t want to lose its star players.”

Gill was recently elected to UEFA’s executive committee, after leaving Manchester United, the club he joined back in 1997.

Rooney is set to discuss his future with new manager David Moyes, before deciding whether he will stay at Old Trafford or not.
