Manchester United could line Marouane Fellaini up in midfield alongside compatriot Axel Witsel, with the Zenit St Petersburg ace’s father having revealed that the player is eager to leave Russia.
The Belgium international has long been hailed as a top European talent, and reports have suggested that he’s firmly on the Premier League giants’ transfer radar.
Witsel himself has declared his love for the Red Devils, opening the door for a swoop this summer.
And now the 26-year-old’s dad, Thierry Witsel, has got involved by revealing that his son is ready to leave St Petersburg at the end of the season.
“Axel has never regretted his move from Benfica to Zenit, but three years St. Petersburg has been enough,” he is quoted by HLN.
“We hope to leave in style with a title in our pockets. For the moment Zenit have an eight-point advantage over second place.”
Witsel broke through at Standard Liege before joining Benfica, where his talents were exposed on the biggest stage.
Despite interest from top continental sides, the midfielder opted to join Zenit in 2012, in a deal worth £32.5m.
Regardless his spell with one of Russian football’s richest sides, Witsel is yet to claim the league title, which may end with his team clear at the top of the division.
