The German World Cup winner has been the Red Devils’ top centre-back target for some time, with rumours having suggested that Louis van Gaal attempted to push through a deal for him over the summer.
BVB held firm at the time and reports have since claimed that the Germans will maintain their stance this month, even though they sit in the Bundesliga’s relegation zone after a woeful start to the campaign.
However, United are confident that they can get their man and it’s understood that the club are pushing hard to tie up a deal.
Hummels – valued at upwards of £30m – is seen as the ideal man to add some authority to United’s backline, with LVG yet to settle on a three-pronged unit to protect in-form goalkeeper David de Gea.
United also want a holding midfielder, with Roma’s Kevin Strootman a target, yet a deal may have to wait die to funding.
