Manchester United are confident of beating Liverpool to the signature of PSV Eindhoven sensation Memphis Depay, with a £130,000-per-week contract being lined up to make him their first arrival of the coming transfer window, according to the Manchester Evening News.
The Netherlands international has emerged as one of European football’s most highly-rated players this term after firing a staggering 20 goals to help his side claim the Eredivisie title with three games left to play.
Louis van Gaal’s influence is thought to be key, with the Old Trafford boss having a close relationship with the player.
LVG coached Depay in the Oranje set-up in the run up to and through the World Cup, and is believed to be seen as ‘another father’ by the player – whose frosty relationship with his biological father has led to him wearing ‘Memphis’ on his shirt rather than his surname.
United are so keen to land the 21-year-old that they’re willing to offer his a salary of £130,000-per-week, which is likely to be greater than anything the Reds will put forward given their struggles to tie down Raheem Sterling.
Depay has been likened to Cristiano Ronaldo by Dutch hero Ronald De Boer.
