Man United eye £35m summer defender (it’s not Hummels)

Manchester United are confident of securing a summer deal for highly-rated Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane, according to reports from talkSPORT.

The 21-year-old France international has been heavily linked with Chelsea in recent times, and has been described as one of the best young centre-backs in the world by Jose Mourinho.

Dortmund’s Mats Hummels has been mooted as the Red Devils’ major defensive target for the end of the season, yet now reports claim that a £35m raid for Varane is firmly on the club’s agenda.

It’s also claimed that United are ahead of Chelsea in the running for the classy enforcer, with his chances of first-team football, perhaps, greater at Old Trafford.

Louis van Gaal has endured a difficult season so far, with a series of injuries having forced him into fielding a number of defensive combinations in both four and three man backlines.

The Dutchman is thought to see Varane as a long-term solution to his woes.
