Man United eye reliable Prem star as problem solver

Manchester United are plotting a move for Stoke City’s Asmir Begovic as a contingency plan as David de Gea’s uncertain future rumbles on, according to reports from The Mirror.

The Red Devils’ No.1 has been, arguably, Louis van Gaal’s standout performer this season, but despite his importance to the club negotiations surrounding a new £200,000-per-week deal are stalling.

De Gea is being eyed by Spanish giants Real Madrid as a replacement for Iker Casillas, and it’s understood that he’s considering his options as his deal ticks towards its final 12 months.

£25m-rated Spurs star Hugo Lloris has been mooted as a potential replacement for the Old Trafford hero, but now it’s claimed that Begovic is being lined up as a more sensible option.

The Bosnian has been one of the Premier League’s most reliable stoppers in his spell with Stoke, but, like De Gea, he’ll be a free agent in 2016.

The Potters are, as a result, set to consider £8m offers, making him a cost-effective solution.
