Man United eye shock summer freebie

Manchester United are lining up a surprise move to sign former Manchester City midfielder Nigel de Jong on a free transfer this summer, according to reports from the Daily Star.

The Netherlands international played under Louis van Gaal for much of the past few years in the Oranje set-up and was a key part of the nation’s impressive World Cup showing.

And despite his ties with the Sky Blues, the Red Devils chief is thought to be interested in a reunion with the tough tackling enforcer, who is set to be a free agent in under six months’ time.

De Jong currently plies his trade in Italy with AC Milan, but the San Siro giants are yet to reach an agreement to extend his stay beyond the end of the current season.

The 30-year-old is free to discuss a Bosman move with other clubs, which could allow United to get him in for next season.

Although not the most technically adept player, the former Ajax and Hamburg man is a good option in a holding midfield role and can also play as a right-sided full-back.
