Man United eye summer swoop for Doucoure

According to The Mirror, Manchester United are interested in signing Watford midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure at the end of the season.

What’s the story?

United are expected to be in the market for a new central midfielder this summer as Jose Mourinho looks to get the best out of Paul Pogba.

Michael Carrick will retire at the end of the season to become a coach, whilst the future of Marouane Fellaini is very much up in the air.

The 20-time English champions have been linked with a number of midfielders in recent months, but according to The Mirror, Watford’s Doucoure is currently Mourinho’s leading transfer target in that area of the field.

Indeed, it is understood that United scouted Doucoure against West Bromwich Albion last weekend, and the 25-year-old is wanted by the Red Devils at the end of the 2017-18 campaign.

What would Doucoure bring to United?

It is unlikely that Doucoure, who is valued at £10.8m by transfermarkt.co.uk, would break the bank for United.

The former Rennes midfielder joined Watford in the summer of 2016, and he has scored eight times in 46 appearances for the Hornets in all competitions.

This term, the Frenchman, who has previously spoken of his desire to represent Arsenal, has managed seven Premier League goals and three assists in 28 appearances, which is extremely impressive for a central midfielder.

Doucoure combines athleticism and dynamism with excellent technical ability, and it is not a surprise that United have been watching the midfielder in action.

Mourinho needs a player that will be able to release Pogba in the final third of the field, and Doucoure’s legs would be perfect to complement Nemanja Matic in a deeper area.

A number of clubs have been credited with an interest in Doucoure, but United would fancy their chances of winning any race that might occur at the end of the season.
