Manchester United have set their sights on Belgium World Cup sensation Axel Witsel, according to the Metro.
Last month Witsel spoke of his love for United, which sparked rumours of a potential move to Old Trafford in the summer.
And the Metro are today reporting that Louis Van Gaal is eager to sign the Zenit Saint Petersburg midfielder and has sent scouts to take a look at him over in Russia.
Italian giants Juventus are also interested in the 26-year-old, while MailOnline reported last month that both Arsenal and AC Milan have also been keeping tabs on his availability.
But United would have to pay Zenit’s asking price of £32.5million if they want to bring the Belgium international to the Premier League, which is the amount the Russian outfit signed him from Benfica for in 2012.
However, if there is to be a tug-of-war for Witsel in the summer, United might hold the advantage over other potential suiters.
Witsel said last month: “It’s true that I like the Premier League, because it is one of the best league’s in the world, for me, together with Germany and Spain.
“It is a very good league, it is a crazy league. A lot of my colleagues play there, but we will see.
“I am still young, only 26. We‘ll see in the future. I have always liked Manchester United from when I was young.”
