The PSV Eindhoven ace – who has been compared to Old Trafford icon Cristiano Ronaldo – starred for LVG in Brazil, netting two goals for the Oranje, despite the majority of his game time having come from the bench.
Since his showings in South America, Depay has been linked with both United and Spurs, but his club side managed to tie the 20-year-old down to a new contract at the back end of last year.
However, that appears to have done little to deter Van Gaal, who is pondering a £10m swoop.
United are firmly front-runners for his signature, with reports last summer having indicated that the current Red Devils chief urged Depay to wait until this the coming window to move to the Theatre of Dreams.
Depay’s pace, skill and eye for goal have drawn comparisons with Ronaldo – who currently holds the prestigious Ballon d’Or award.
