The Red Devils have spent heavily since the arrival of Louis van Gaal in 2014, but the Dutchman’s squad still appears to be light in terms of both numbers and options in many areas.
As a result the mid-season window is being looked at, and the Daily Star, citing Sky Sports, claim that scouts from United were in attendance to watch Gaya, Gomes and Mustafi during Valencia’s Champions League clash with Gent this week.
Gaya appears to be the player the Manchester giants need the most of the trio, with the Spaniard a left-sided defender.
Luke Shaw’s horrific leg injury is likely to ensure that he doesn’t play again this season, which has left LVG short of options in the role.
Mustafi, a former Everton youngster, is a central defender, who could offer depth and quality alongside Chris Smalling and Phil Jones.
Lastly, central midfielder Gomes is known for his creativity and tenacity, and at the age of 22 appears to have a big future ahead of him.
