According to The Sun, Manchester United will face competition from Bayern Munich for AC Milan centre-back Leonardo Bonucci in this summer's transfer window.

What's the story?

Milan's failure to qualify for next season's Champions League means that the Italian giants are under pressure to sell some of their biggest stars this summer in order to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations.

Bonucci only joined Milan from Juventus last summer, but according to a number of reports in Italy, the 31-year-old will leave the San Siro ahead of the 2018-19 season.

United boss Jose Mourinho is believed to have a strong interest in the defender, but according to The Sun, German giants Bayern will fight the Red Devils for the Italian international.

Chelsea also have a long-standing interest in Bonucci, although it is understood that their failure to make next season's Champions League has ruled the Blues out of the running - leaving United and Bayern to battle for his signature.

Would Bonucci be a good signing for United?

United are expected to sign at least one new centre-back in this summer's transfer window, and they have been strongly linked with Tottenham Hotspur's Toby Alderweireld.

Bonucci was outstanding for Juventus between 2010 and 2017, but it would be fair to say that the centre-back did not enjoy his best season at Milan.

There is absolutely no doubting his quality, however, and the 77-time Italy international would have no problems settling into life in the Premier League.

Mourinho wants players with experience of winning major titles, and Bonucci certainly falls into that category having lifted the Serie A title on seven separate occasions during a wonderful career.

According to transfermarkt.co.uk, Bonucci is valued at £31.5m, and it would be an absolute no-brainer for the 20-time English champions to move for the world-class centre-back if given the chance this summer.
