The transfer season can be a miserable time if your club is in the lurch, and to say that Manchester United are in the lurch would be a massive understatement.

There's no doubt that Romelu Lukaku is a player who divides opinion and, for certain sections of the fanbase, wouldn't be viewed as a great loss if he left this summer.

And fans harbouring that opinion have been left distraught after Sky Sports Italia, via The Metro, claimed that the Red Devils have rejected a swap deal for Mauro Icardi.

Icardi is one of the most lethal hitmen in the footballing world.

His return of 124 goals in 219 Inter appearances suggests he'd almost certainly shine at the spearhead of the attack following a move to Manchester, although it seems the Old Trafford hierarchy have reservations about the controversial attacker.

Back in February, it came out that Mauro Icardi had been stripped of the captaincy at Inter Milan. Shortly after this major power shift, his wife and agent, Wanda, proceeded to criticise his teammates on TV chat shows - a sequence of events which undoubtedly tarnished his reputation on a level which transcended far beyond the San Siro.

Despite the fact that Icardi boasts a frighteningly prolific goal-scoring record, it appears that his potentially disruptive nature may have deterred United's interest in bringing him to the club.

Considering the number of problems which already exist at United, it's easy to understand why they have snubbed a swap deal.
