Man United fans on Twitter want Paul Pogba as new captain after World Cup win

Manchester United’s club captain Michael Carrick retired at the end of last season and fans on Twitter have been calling for Paul Pogba to be handed the armband following his performance in the World Cup final.

Carrick was given the honour after Wayne Rooney left the club in the summer of 2017. With Mourinho using him sparingly, the midfielder only made five appearances in all competitions last season and right-back Antonio Valencia deputised in his absence.

However, The Metro is reporting that the 32-year-old Ecuadorian will be overlooked for the role on a permanent basis and says Nemanja Matic and goalkeeper David De Gea are the front runners in Jose Mourinho’s plans.

Among United fans though, Pogba has emerged as a clear favourite since he scored his side’s third goal in France’s 4-2 World Cup Final win over Croatia. The 25-year-old was much criticised last season as United finished second in the league behind rivals Manchester City, but fans of the Red Devils clearly believe he is now ready to lead the team after his summer performances.
