It has been in the pipeline for much of the season but Michael Carrick has confirmed that he will retire from football at the end of the current season.

Injury problems have prevented the United captain from featuring for most of the season and Jose Mourinho had previously offered the former Tottenham man a spot on his coaching team.

Therefore, it is no major surprise that the experienced midfielder is to draw the curtain on an illustrious career when the season comes to an end.

With United still competing in the FA Cup and the Champions League, Carrick will hope to sign off at Old Trafford by winning a trophy to add to the one of each he has won as well as five Premier League titles and three League Cups.

United fans have always appreciated the 36-year-old, who found his international opportunities limited and we've taken a look at the best of their responses on Twitter...
