Man United fans pay tribute to Rio Ferdinand

Manchester United have had some wonderful centre-backs in the Premier League era, but it is difficult to place too many above a certain Rio Ferdinand.

The London-born defender represented the Red Devils between 2002 and 2014 – making 455 appearances in all competitions.

He won six Premier League titles and one Champions League during his time at Old Trafford, and will go down as one of the club’s best ever centre-backs.

Ferdinand turned 39 on Tuesday, and as expected, United’s official Twitter account paid tribute to the footballer-turned-boxer.

A number of United fans were also on hand to praise Ferdinand, with many branding the defender ‘a legend’.

When United paid just under £30m to sign Ferdinand from Leeds United in the summer of 2002, it would be fair to say that eyebrows were raised. The Red Devils more than had their money’s worth, however, after 12 years of excellent service.
