Manchester United failed to get the draw they needed to advance to the knockout stages of the Champions League after they were beaten 1-0 by FC Basel on Wednesday night, and Red Devils fans weren’t impressed with Ander Herrera’s performance.
Jose Mourinho’s men knew that a point would be enough to guarantee their spot in the last 16, and they looked set to get it before Michael Lang’s 89th-minute goal for the hosts.
Anything less than a seven-goal defeat to CSKA Moscow on the final matchday will still be enough to see them progress, but the likes of Herrera may fear for their places in the team following the showing in Switzerland.
The Spaniard lined up alongside Paul Pogba and Marouane Fellaini in the middle of the park, but he struggled with his passing and failed to make a real impact on the game.
Man United supporters were quick to have their say on his display via social media, and while one said he is “a shadow of his former self”, another said it’s the “worst I’ve ever seen Herrera play”.
Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…
Herrera returns to the Manchester United team and we lose. Herrera last 5 starts for United: Won 2 Lost 3. Ouch. Poor player. #MUFC

I think we need to do a city and spend big on fullbacks. Darmian and Blind are woeful. Also struggling to see what Herrera does for the team? #MUFC

How can Herrera's form drops so drastically this season? I was hoping for him to be one of the star players this season tbh #mufc

It's like Herrera has forgotten how to play football #Mufc

Jose is a word that my mother won’t let me use! So negative. Basel deserved it second half but Jose’s subs sent a clear message that he was happy with a draw. Worst I’ve ever seen Herrera play didn’t pass forward once, massively lacking confidence. #MUFC

Rashford came on and offered nothing. Darmian & Blind still get game time. Herrera a shadow of his former self. Lukaku out on the right? That second half was awful Jose. #mufc
