Four Sporting Lisbon players – including speedy winger Gelson Martins – have rescinded their contracts with the Portuguese outfit, as reported by The Telegraph on Tuesday morning, and Manchester United fans have urged their club to sign the attacker, rated at £27m by Transfermarkt.
The Telegraph report that the Portugal international, along with teammates William Carvalho, Bruno Fernandes and Bas Dost, have all filed notice that they are breaking their contracts, claiming “just cause” after some of the players were attacked by supporters at the training ground after they missed out on Champions League qualifitcation.
Meanwhile, Red Devils manager Jose Mourinho, who should sign a 6ft 3in England international whose future appears uncertain, may well be looking to add a right winger to his attack this summer with the likes of Juan Mata struggling to make an impression there last term, and his national compatriot should be of interest – especially if he is potentially available for nothing.
Man United supporters were quick to have their say on Martins via social media, and while one said “we need to get him before Arsenal or Chelsea do”, another said “he should 100% be brought in to be understudy to Bale/Griezmann at RW”.
Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…
Hope we get Gelson at least. Been a while since we signed a RW. If Griez extends his deal at Atleti we need to get him before Arsenal or Chelsea do.

We should be all over Gelson Martins. It's a win-win situation. If he doesnt do well we can sell him and make a profit…. #mufc

Gelson Martins on a free wouldn't be the worst bit of transfer business. Can cross with either foot and young enough to still progress.

That's how I fill our CM and RW positions pic.twitter.com/Fl4d0LP7oc

Gelson Martins and William Carvalho have both terminated their contracts at Sporting Lisbon so they’re available for free. If we were a sensible club then would go for both. Would solve our RW issues and Mourinho did say he’d want another midfielder if Fellaini was to leave..

I seriously think #MUFC should at least consider getting Gelson Martins now.
If it turns out good then it's an absolute steal as he's easily a 30 million player in other situations and if not we can always sell him for profit.
