Manchester United’s defence this season has been a bit of a laughing stock. With full-backs at centre-back, midfielders roped in alongside them and wingers deployed as wing-backs, Louis van Gaal’s patchwork backline has grabbed some headlines.
But the trip to Stoke today sees a more orthodox rearguard in action, with a central three of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans flanked by Luke Shaw and Ashley Young. Okay, the latter is very much out of position, but having Shaw back in the set-up alongside an orthodox trio of defenders is a major positive, and United fans seem happy with he selection of the Southampton youth product:
