Swansea City edged closer to relegation to the Championship as they were beaten 1-0 by fellow Premier League strugglers Southampton at the Liberty Stadium on Tuesday night, and Manchester United fans have urged their club to sign Swans centre-back Alfie Mawson – rated at £50m according to the Daily Star.
While it has been a disappointing campaign for the Welsh club, the defender has been one of their most consistent and standout performers throughout the campaign, playing every minute of their 37 top flight matches to date.
The 24-year-old is known for his leadership qualities, his strength in the air, his willingness to put his body on the lines and his ability on the ball, and he looks as though he is ready to make the step up with one of the big clubs in the Premier League – he could potentially be a replacement for Chris Smalling, whom United fans on Twitter want to see go this summer, or Phil Jones at Old Trafford.
Man United supporters were quick to have their say on Mawson following his latest display, and while one simply said “sign Mawson, Jose”, another said “Go and sign Alfie Mawson. Given the opportunity, he will develop and be a top player at Manchester United”.
Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…
