Louis van Gaal believes that Angel di Maria will still be a Manchester United player next season, despite concerns surrounding his future.
The Argentine became British football’s most expensive player last summer as he switched to Old Trafford from Real Madrid in a £59.7m deal, and was widely hailed as the player to become the fulcrum of LVG’s new-look Red Devils unit.
However, after some initially bright showings, the silky attacking midfielder’s form has tailed off dramatically over the winter period – he has just three assists to his name since the start of December.
His slide has been alarming, and was summed up by his disappointing red card in last week’s FA Cup loss to Arsenal.
There have since been reports that United are looking to sell him this summer, but Van Gaal believes that Di Maria will still be at the club beyond this summer:
“Despite that incident… he is very pleased to be here at Manchester United,” he told BBC Sport.
“I am always compassionate about a player’s needs and although I cannot say anything for definite about his future, I don’t think he will move.”
