Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is hopeful that Angel di Maria and Radamel Falcao can help to convince Fabio Coentrao to switch to Old Trafford from Real Madrid in January, according to reports from The Express.
Despite signing Luke Shaw and Marcos Rojo over the summer, the Red Devils boss is rumoured to remain on the lookout for a left-sided defender.
Coentrao is a long-term United target – he almost joined them on loan during David Moyes’ tenure – and the Dutchman is a fan of the player.
The Portuguese ace looks set to leave Real in the not too distant future, with Marcelo firmly embedded ahead of him in Los Blancos’ first-team.
Monaco are also interested in the former Benfica star, but LVG is keen to use Falcao and Di Maria to lure the 26-year-old to Manchester.
The United duo share the same agent, Jorge Mendes, as Coentrao, which could be a tool in the Premier League club’s armoury.
Shaw has struggled with fitness issues since making his £27m switch to United over the summer, while Rojo may be used as a centre-back in the long-term due to a lack of cover in the position at the club.
