Man United legend calls for signings after defeat

Manchester United’s opening day defeat at home to Swansea has highlighted a need for top class signings, according to Paul Scholes.

The Red Devils slipped to a surprise 2-1 loss at Old Trafford during Louis van Gaal’s first competitive game at the helm, in which he made a number of surprise inclusions in his first XI.

Injuries played their part in forcing the Dutchman’s hand, but a league debut for defender Tyler Blackett raised eyebrows, while Ashley Young and another debutant Jesse Lingard – both attacking wingers – were used in wing-back roles.

A number of players have been linked with big moves to United in recent weeks, but with the transfer window due to close on September 1st, time is running out.

Arturo Vidal, Angel di Maria, Daley Blind and Mats Hummels are all understood to be targets, and Scholes believes that fresh blood is needed at his old club:

“The quality end to end was lacking,” he said live on BT Sport.

Van Gaal knows now that he needs players but I think he probably knew that beforehand and he knows it more than ever now.

“We definitely needed players from the start, whether he being at the World Cup was a factor doesn’t matter.

“In the midfield area the quality wasn’t there.”
